SOTHEBY’S RAISE A GLASS TO PHENOMENAL SALES
Sotheby’s, the premier destination for auctions and private sales, from art to watches to whisky, announced that they have surpassed their 2022 sales revenue of $158m in their wine and spirits sector.
Perhaps unsurprisingly the Asian market was the most dominant for spirits bidding last year, totalling 55% of market share. The US market however spent the most on spirits.
A rare bottle of Macallan 1926 sold for a staggering £2.1 million at Sotheby’s back in Nivember 2023, breaking the record for the most expensive spirit ever sold at auction.
Macallan, often dubbed the ‘Rolls-Royce of whisky’ was the top selling spirit for Sotheby’s, accounting for 33% of the sales, with Karuizawa quite a distinace away in second with a share of 12%.
Nick Pegna the Global Head of Sotheby’s Wine and Spirits stated “We sold as many wines and spirits by value in one extraordinary week in 2023, as the whole of 2013,”.
We look forward to seeing how Sotheby’s and the whisky market performs in 2024!
