Reviving Heritage: Port Ellen Distillery Begins Official Process, Bringing Whisky Back to Islay

Diageo’s iconic Port Ellen distillery on Islay is on its way to make a historic comeback, resuming Scotch whisky distillation after a hiatus of 40 years. The distillery which closed in 1983 is currently undergoing preparations for its public opening in March, which will feature a new visitor center. According to Ewan Andrew, Diageo’s President of Global Supply Chain, this reopening marks the final step in the company’s impressive £185 million investment in whisky tourism.

In addition to Port Ellen, Diageo have continued their commitment to the whisky industry with ongoing investments that total more than £230 million. These funds will not only increase distillery capacity but also focus on decarbonising the sites. Mr. Andrew emphasised the importance of these investments, outlining plans to upgrade sites to operate seven days a week instead of five.

The reopening of Port Ellen is a big milestone for Diageo, reflecting its dedication to preserving and advancing Scotland’s rich whisky heritage. 

As a key player in the Scotch whisky industry, Diageo’s investments aim to ensure its readiness for the coming decades. Mr. Andrew hinted at more exciting ventures in the north-east, building anticipation for Diageo’s continued growth and innovation.
