JOHNNIE WALKER UNVEILS WORLD’S LIGHTEST WHISKY BOTTLE

Johnnie Walker, the Diageo-owned whisky giant, has unveiled a limited edition Blue Label Ultra, featuring the world’s lightest 700ml Scotch whisky glass bottle, weighing just 180g. This innovative bottle is the result of five years of experimentation, showcasing a blend of luxury, craftsmanship, and sustainability. Set to be officially introduced at the London Design Festival on 14th September, this lightweight marvel is a first for the whisky industry.
Crafted with a sleek teardrop shape that reimagines the traditional square Johnnie Walker bottle, this design exemplifies the brand’s dedication to pushing boundaries. The Blue Label Ultra bottle was created using hand-blown glass, and its design hints at the future of lighter, low-carbon glass bottles, as part of Diageo’s Spirit of Progress action plan.
Master Blender Dr Emma Walker crafted a special blend for this edition, incorporating whisky from distilleries such as Oban, Brora, and Royal Lochnagar, along with rare ‘ghost whiskies’ from closed distilleries. Only 888 bottles of this unique expression will be released in 2025, priced at £1,000.
Jennifer English, global brand ambassador, described the Blue Label Ultra as a groundbreaking achievement, and although the technology behind the lightweight bottle isn’t yet available for mass production, Johnnie Walker has secured a UK patent and is offering a royalty-free licence to encourage wider adoption of the innovation. This step marks a significant stride towards a sustainable future for Scotch whisky packaging.
