SWEDISH DISTILLERY MACKMYRA DECLARES BANKRUPTCY
Swedish whisky distiller Mackmyra has filed for bankruptcy. The news was confirmed in a statement on the company’s website, where Chairman Petter Ski expressed deep regret over the closure of operations. Ski noted that, despite significant efforts from the board and management to stabilise profitability and cash flow, it became clear that continuing the business was no longer viable.
Ski, who took over as chairman just over a year ago, highlighted the efforts to find a long-term solution but acknowledged that time had simply run out. “I sincerely hope that the bankruptcy trustee now has the chance to do something constructive with the values in the company and secure the Mackmyra brand and its 25-year history,” he said.
The decision comes during the company’s 25th anniversary, with bankruptcy filing coinciding with what was supposed to be a positive turning point for the brand, as they had recently re-entered the UK market.
Mackmyra was established in 1999 by eight whisky enthusiasts during a skiing trip, they were seen as a pioneer in Sweden’s whisky industry. It started in the village of Mackmyra and relocated in 2011 to a state-of-the-art gravity distillery, designed to boost production to 2.4 million bottles annually. The brand’s focus on single malts gained international recognition. Moreover, the company was a forerunner in innovation, collaborating with Microsoft and Fourkind to create an AI-generated whisky blend, further enhancing its reputation.
The brand had also recently resumed operations in the UK through a new partnership with Summerton Whisky Club, with plans to introduce an updated core range featuring its Svensk Ek and Svensk Rök single malts.
