GORDON & MACPHAIL UNVEILS THIRD RECOLLECTION SERIES FEATURING RARE WHISKIES FROM CLOSED DISTILLERIES

Gordon & MacPhail, one of Scotland’s most esteemed independent whisky bottlers, has launched the third edition of their highly anticipated Recollection Series, bringing to life six rare and exceptional single cask whiskies from some of Scotland’s closed or long-silent distilleries. This latest release continues the legacy of showcasing some of the most elusive and sought-after whiskies in the world, giving enthusiasts a rare glimpse into Scotland’s whisky history.
The Recollection Series has become a significant tradition in the whisky world. With each edition, Gordon & MacPhail offers a collection of whiskies that were once distilled at now-closed or long-silent distilleries, and this year’s offering is no exception. The 2024 series features whiskies from iconic distilleries such as Rosebank, Port Ellen, Glenlochy Convalmore, Imperial, North Port, and Port Ellen—distilleries that have captured the imaginations of whisky lovers and collectors for years. These whiskies, each bottled at cask strength, have been maturing in the renowned Gordon & MacPhail warehouse for decades, some for over 40 years, making them incredibly rare and truly historic releases.
The spirits from these distilleries represent a snapshot of Scotland’s whisky history, each bottling a story in itself. The Rosebank release, for instance, has been maturing in cask for an impressive 32 years, while the Glenlochy release has aged for an extraordinary 44 years. These whiskies are a direct result of the strong relationships Gordon & MacPhail has forged over nearly 130 years with distilleries.
The whisky giants’ deep-rooted connections with distillery owners and managers during their prime years mean that, thanks to Gordon & MacPhail’s commitment to preserving these gems, whisky lovers today can enjoy the fruits of these long-forgotten distilleries. For many whisky connoisseurs, these bottles are more than just a drink—they are a piece of whisky history, a rare opportunity to taste a whisky style that has not been made in years, and in some cases, decades.
This year’s edition of the *Recollection Series* also includes a striking visual element that draws attention to the distilleries’ rich history. The packaging has been redesigned in collaboration with Bruno Mangyoku, an Emmy-award-winning animator and illustrator known for his distinctive artistic style. Mangyoku’s artwork reimagines the closed distilleries in their former glory, giving each release the feeling of a ‘lost work of art.’ His bold and evocative illustrations convey the essence of these distilleries at their peak, bringing the stories of these forgotten places back to life in a way that is both modern and respectful to their heritage.
Each of the limited-edition bottles comes adorned with Mangyoku’s illustrations, which are also available as standalone art pieces for purchase. This combination of art and whisky history offers whisky collectors and enthusiasts something truly special—both a piece of Scotland’s distilling history and an opportunity to own a beautifully packaged collectible.
Each whisky in the series is bottled at cask strength, preserving the full depth and complexity of the whisky as it was intended to be enjoyed. With decades of maturation behind them, these whiskies have developed unique flavours that speak to the craftsmanship of their original distillers. As a result, the whiskies are incredibly limited in quantity, making them all the more desirable for collectors and connoisseurs.
As Stuart Urquhart, Operations Director at Gordon & MacPhail, notes: “This year marks our third Recollection Series, which again brings a carefully chosen selection of rare and unique whiskies to enthusiasts worldwide. We’re fortunate enough to have access to a liquid library which is testament to the relationships we’ve nurtured with whisky distillers for almost 130 years.”
