WHISKEY AGED IN SPACE?!
Mile High Spirits out in Denver teamed up with aerospace company World View back in July 2021 to send a barrel of its Fireside Whiskey into the stratosphere.
With the whiskey back on earth, the distillery is now offering 500 limited-edition 50ml bottles of this unique space-aged whiskey. Wyn Ferrell, owner of Mile High Spirits, shared the inspiration behind the project: “We’ve always been fascinated by the science behind distilling and how various factors influence the flavour of our whiskey. Our stratospheric whiskey defies gravity, transcending tradition. It beckons us to explore beyond the ordinary, to taste the universe itself.”
Mile High Spirits claims that Strato Whiskey is the first commercially available product that has been sent to the stratosphere.
The whiskey was launched on July 15 2021 at 7:03 am from Page, Arizona, where it faced near-vacuum conditions and temperatures that dropped to -60℃. Mile High Spirits believes that the extreme temperatures will enhance the interaction between the whiskey and the barrel, enriching its flavour and complexity.
While Mile High Spirits is making the headlines, it is not the first to explore whiskey maturation in space. In May 2021, Glenlivet sent barley seeds into space aboard a SpaceX rocket, and in 2011, Ardbeg launched a vial of whisky to test the effects of gravity on the maturation process.
