PENDERYN WHISKY HALTS SWANSEA PRODUCTION AMID ECONOMIC SLOWDOWN
In a surprising turn of events, Penderyn Whisky have announced they are ‘pausing’ production at their Swansea distillery, just one year after opening. The state-of-the-art facility cited a slowdown in the economy and decreased demand as the primary reasons for this decision.
The Swansea Copperworks underwent extensive restoration and development over three years. The end result was a superb distillery and visitor site, with aims to increase local tourism.
Neil Quigley, Penderyn’s Chief Operating Officer, said that the site is not closing permanently but is merely pausing its production. “We are aligning our spirit production with our forward sales forecast and will be looking to resume production as soon as possible.”
The news will be a shock to many, especially the staff at the Swansea facility. An insider revealed that on July 17, staff were told that they would be laid off in two weeks, with all production ceasing thereafter.
Penderyn’s decision reflects broader economic trends affecting luxury and premium products worldwide. As consumers close their wallets amid economic uncertainty, the demand for high-end whisky has taken a knock.
Whilst production is being paused, the visitor experience is still going strong, offering customers insights into the distillery’s operations and the history of copper smelting. Visitors can still explore the exhibition area, experience the ‘copper tunnel,’ and see the unique Faraday Stills in action. The tours finish in a tasting bar, allowing guests to sample the high-quality spirits that Penderyn is renowned for.
Stephen Davies, Penderyn’s CEO, had high hopes for the site, expressing optimism about its long-term prospects. With significant funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund and support from the Welsh Government, the Hafod Morfa Copperworks project symbolises a broader effort to preserve and rejuvenate historical landmarks in Wales.
