FÈIS ÌLE FESTIVAL ON THE ROCKS DUE TO FERRY ISSUES
Fèis Ìle, the famous Islay whisky festival is in jeopardy this year due to Scotland’s ferry issues. The annual whisky event which brings in over £10 million to the local economy, is at risk as CalMac Ferries has failed to provide the usual additional ferries needed for whisky enthusiasts to attend.
Up to 20,000 visitors are expected on Islay and Jura for the nine-day long whisky festival which occurs at the end of May. Despite efforts and support from MSPs, the Fèis Ìle Committee has said that 40% of visitors are unable to secure sailings, while those who can may face other issues due to a potential transport crisis on the island.
Florence Grey the festival chairman has outlined the impact this could have on the island’s businesses, with hotels and accommodation providers facing potential cancellations.
The whisky festival organisers have asked the Scottish Government to intervene, outlining that this issue extends beyond CalMac alone. It is not yet known if a solution will be found.
